The Tenets of Matrixism

There are four tenets of Matrixism as stated by the original website:

  1. Belief in the prophecy of the One.
  2. Recognition of the semi-subjective multi-layered nature of reality.
  3. Adherence to the principles of one or more of the world's religions until such time as the One returns.
  4. Acceptance of the use of psychedelics as a sacrament.

Clarification of the four tenets

Belief in the prophecy of the One

The prophecy of the One has a long history in both the true world and various fictional worlds.  The persons who have fulfilled this prophecy have included Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Neo and even Anakin Skywalker.  The prophecy of "the One" is not necessarily limited to a single person.  As the Matrix trilogy explains, there are multiple versions of "the One" over time.  Matrixists will believe in the prophecy that the next "One" will appear sometime in the future.

Recognition of the semi-subjective multi-layered nature of reality

While Matrixists don't really believe that we live in a computer simulation as shown in the Matrix trilogy, we find that there is more to the world that what is physically around us.  Already we are see a blurring of multiple realities when we let in television, movies, video games and the Internet.  This is in addition to the possibilities of other 'realities' such as the after-life which some claim there are those in the after-life (ghosts) who can interact with our primary reality.  More information about hyper-reality can be found in "Simulacra and Simulation" by Jean Baudrillard.

Adherence to the principles of one or more of the world's religions until such time as the One returns

Unlike other religions, Matrixism does not have an exclusivity clause as a condition of its practice.  Like Baha'ism that came before it, Matrixism recognizes the prophets of all the world's major religions: Abraham, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Krishna, Muhammad, Zoroaster.  All of the worlds religions have aspects that are valuable and can lead to living a healthy life.  Matrixism recognizes this in other religions and chooses to embrace the positive aspects of those we share this world with.

Acceptance of the use of psychedelics as sacrament

Many people take this tenet to be encouragement of illegal drug use.  This interpretation is equivalent to Catholicism encouraging drinking alcohol since they offer wine during communion.  A sacrament is a religious rite, or religious practice, during which Matrixists may consume psychedelics as part of its service.  This is not a requirement in practicing Matrixism just as drinking wine is not a requirement of communion.
