The world appears to be engrosses in the potential for the latest flu virus to become a pandemic causing mass deaths world-wide. At the moment there are more than 44,000 news articles on Google for "swine influenza." There are concerns about whether to eat pork or not, determining what is a pandemic, and how to tell the difference between the symptoms of a swine influenza and the regular flu.
My question is, should we really care if it becomes a global pandemic killing millions of people?
If we look in both fictional literature and through actual human history we see many examples of incidences happening that significantly reduced the dominate population of the time. Disease has repeatedly been a cause of mass human deaths (plagues, cholera, and influenzas); some of these have killed only tens of thousands of people while others have killed tens of millions. In the distant past there was a major event (whether an asteroid colliding the earth, massive volcanic eruptions, or some other event) that killed off dinosaurs, the once major species of the Earth. We can even point to the Matrix and The Happening as fictional examples of how the human population dies in mass numbers.
To me, it's obvious and apparent that these events are part of the natural cycle of life on Earth. It is certainly possible to have too many people on this world when we start to strain its natural resources. A few years ago there was a minor controversy as a professor from the University of Texas announced that "mass death is imminent". I think what really irked people was his blase attitude toward the issue (he welcomed it and took joy in discussing the most effective way it would happen).
We as humans find reasons to control the populations of lower level species whether it be a rat infestation or uncontrolled fishing that causes a species of fish to become extinct. It's only fair that some other.... power.... decides to find a way to control the population of humans. Fewer people means fewer resources are needed to feed, clothe, and support the population. Those who survive will have learned to respect the world we live, if they didn't respect it already. We will learn that we do not dominate this world, rather we must work with it since we cannot live without the Earth's help.
I think we should welcome an event such as this, in the end it will likely be for the better for the population and the human civilization.

I thought I was a terrible
I thought I was a terrible person for having this mentality. I mean of course it's sad to think about, but if the Earth needs to do this to survive, we need to respect that.
